💆 Mind-body approach

More than just martial arts.

Dragon Tao goes beyond technique. You develop a complete mind-body skill that stays with you for life — no matter your age or fitness level.

🧠

Mind-Body Connection

Wing Chun trains you to relax under pressure, move with structure, and develop an awareness of your body that goes far beyond fitness. You’ll feel the difference quickly.

🛡️

Practical Self-Defence

Wing Chun is built for real situations — not point-scoring or sport. Techniques rely on structure and angles, not size or strength. Equally effective for men and women.

🌿

Stress Relief & Clarity

The internal nature of Wing Chun is genuinely calming. Students consistently report lower stress, better focus, and improved sleep — benefits that carry into everyday life.

What you’ll learn.

Siu Nim Tao (First Form)

The foundational form — developing correct structure, relaxation, and internal power from the ground up.

Chi Sao (Sticky Hands)

Wing Chun’s signature sensitivity drill — developing reflexes, timing, and the ability to respond without thinking.

Self-Defence Applications

Practical techniques drawn from the forms — blocks, strikes, and entries tested against real attacks.

Advanced Forms & Weapons

For committed students — Chum Kiu, Biu Jee, Wooden Dummy, Butterfly Swords, and Dragon Pole.

Wing Chun Chi Sao training at Dragon Tao Kung Fu Mona Vale

Structured, focused, and welcoming.

Classes move through warm-up, form practice, partner drills, and Chi Sao. The structure is consistent — so you can track your own progress clearly from week to week.

Class sizes are kept small. This isn’t a gym where you’re left to your own devices — instructors give direct feedback and correct your technique from the start.

Beginners train alongside more experienced students. That’s intentional — it accelerates your development and builds a genuine training community.

You don’t need to be fit to start. Wing Chun relies on position and structure, not brute strength. Most students notice their fitness improving as a byproduct of training — not the other way around.

Sifu Scott Smith — Wing Chun instructor, Dragon Tao Kung Fu

Sifu Scott Smith

Wing Chun Instructor — Training since 1998

Scott has trained in martial arts since 1988. He discovered Wing Chun in 1998 and has devoted the years since to mastering and teaching it — developing a rare depth of understanding that comes through clearly in the way he teaches.

Since 2010, Scott has trained regularly in Hong Kong directly with top Wing Chun masters, including the late Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin — one of Ip Man’s top students. This direct lineage is what distinguishes Dragon Tao from most Wing Chun schools.

Alongside Wing Chun, Scott has trained in Chi Kung (qigong) and meditation, incorporating these mind-body principles into his teaching. The result is a training environment where you develop genuine internal skills — not just technique to perform under pressure.

  • Wing Chun practitioner since 1998 — martial arts since 1988
  • Direct student of Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin (Ip Man lineage)
  • Regular training trips to Hong Kong since 2010
  • Teaching adults and children since 2001 in Australia
  • Host of the Australian Wing Chun Federation Annual Conference
  • Integrates Chi Kung and meditation principles into Wing Chun training

What people ask us.

If you don’t see your question here, call or text 0417 492 382.

Do I need any experience?

None at all. Most adults start with zero martial arts background and that’s completely normal. The intro month is specifically designed to onboard beginners properly. You’ll feel at home quickly.

Am I too old / unfit to start?

Wing Chun is genuinely suitable for all ages and fitness levels. It relies on structure and the mind — not strength or speed. Students train well into their 60s and beyond. Your fitness improves as a natural byproduct of training.

What makes Wing Chun different from other martial arts?

Wing Chun trains for real, close-range situations — no sport rules, no high kicks, no reliance on physical dominance. It emphasises relaxation, structure, and timing. The internal approach means the more you practise, the more efficient you become.

What is the Ip Man lineage?

Ip Man was the most famous Wing Chun grandmaster — and the teacher of Bruce Lee. Sifu Scott trained directly with Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin, one of Ip Man’s top students, in Hong Kong. That direct lineage is rare and means the style you learn here is authentic and unmodified.

What should I wear to the free trial?

Comfortable clothes you can move in — trackpants and a t-shirt is perfect. You’ll train in shoes, so runners or flat sold shoes are recommended. Full uniform details are shared when you confirm your trial.

How long until I see real progress?

Most students feel the difference in their body mechanics within the first few weeks. Visible self-defence capability typically develops within a few months of consistent training. The depth of Wing Chun is a lifelong journey — but the early wins are meaningful and motivating.

Are private lessons available?

Yes. Private lessons with Sifu Scott are available to all members at $120/hour, or $300 for a pack of three. They’re particularly useful for accelerating specific areas of your game or for working through challenges in your technique.

Is there a contract?

No contracts. Monthly memberships require 14 days notice to cancel. Multi-month packages are available at a discount if you want to commit for a longer period — but there’s no obligation to do so.

Ready to try a free class?
