More than just martial arts.

Dragon Tao goes beyond technique. You develop a complete mind-body skill that stays with you for life — no matter your age or fitness level.

🧠

Mind-Body Connection

Wing Chun trains you to relax under pressure, move with structure, and develop an awareness of your body that goes far beyond fitness. You’ll feel the difference quickly.

🛡️

Practical Self-Defence

Wing Chun is built for real situations — not point-scoring or sport. Techniques rely on structure and angles, not size or strength. Equally effective for men and women.

🌿

Stress Relief & Clarity

The internal nature of Wing Chun is genuinely calming. Students consistently report lower stress, better focus, and improved sleep — benefits that carry into everyday life.

What you’ll learn.

Siu Nim Tao (First Form)

The foundational form — developing correct structure, relaxation, and internal power from the ground up.

Chi Sao (Sticky Hands)

Wing Chun’s signature sensitivity drill — developing reflexes, timing, and the ability to respond without thinking.

Self-Defence Applications

Practical techniques drawn from the forms — blocks, strikes, and entries tested against real attacks.

Advanced Forms & Weapons

For committed students — Chum Kiu, Biu Jee, Wooden Dummy, Butterfly Swords, and Dragon Pole.

Wing Chun Chi Sao training at Dragon Tao Kung Fu

Structured, focused, and welcoming.

Classes move through warm-up, form practice, partner drills, and Chi Sao. The structure is consistent — so you can track your own progress clearly from week to week.

Class sizes are kept small. Instructors give direct feedback and correct your technique from the start — this isn’t a gym where you’re left to figure things out alone.

You don’t need to be fit to start. Wing Chun relies on position and structure, not brute strength. Most students notice their fitness improving as a byproduct of training — not the other way around.

Sifu Scott Smith — Head Instructor, Dragon Tao Kung Fu

Sifu Scott Smith

Head Instructor — Wing Chun since 1998

Dragon Tao Kung Fu is led by Sifu Scott Smith, who has trained in martial arts since 1988 and Wing Chun since 1998. Since 2010, Scott has trained regularly in Hong Kong directly with Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin — one of Ip Man’s top students — giving Dragon Tao a direct lineage that very few schools can offer.

Dee Why classes are taught by Dragon Tao’s experienced instructor team, trained under Sifu Scott and held to the same standard across all locations. The curriculum, approach, and quality of instruction are consistent whether you train in Dee Why or Mona Vale.

  • Direct lineage to Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin (Ip Man lineage)
  • Regular training in Hong Kong with world-leading masters since 2010
  • Teaching adults and children since 2001 in Australia

What people ask us.

If you don’t see your question here, call or text 0417 492 382.

Do I need any experience?

None at all. Most adults start with zero martial arts background and that’s completely normal. The intro month is designed to onboard beginners properly. You’ll feel at home quickly.

Is only one class per week enough to progress?

One class per week will develop real skill over time, and many students train this way successfully. For faster progress, the Unlimited plan lets you add Mona Vale sessions — most students who train 2–3 times per week see noticeably quicker improvement.

How far is Mona Vale from Dee Why?

About 15 minutes by car. Most Unlimited members find it easy to add one or two Mona Vale sessions to their weekly routine. Mona Vale classes run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

Am I too old or unfit to start?

Wing Chun is genuinely suitable for all ages and fitness levels. It relies on structure and position — not strength or speed. Students train well into their 60s and beyond. Fitness improves naturally as a byproduct of training.

What makes this different from other martial arts?

Wing Chun trains for real, close-range situations — no sport rules, no high kicks, no reliance on physical dominance. The internal approach means the more you practise, the more efficient you become. It also has a genuine mind-body dimension that most martial arts don’t offer.

What is the Ip Man lineage?

Ip Man was the most famous Wing Chun grandmaster — and the teacher of Bruce Lee. Sifu Scott trained directly with Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin, one of Ip Man’s top students, in Hong Kong. That direct lineage is rare and means the style is authentic and unmodified.

What should I wear to the free trial?

Comfortable clothes you can move in — trackpants and a t-shirt is perfect. You’ll train barefoot or in flat-soled shoes. Full details are shared when you confirm your trial.

Is there a contract?

No contracts. Monthly memberships require 30 days notice to cancel. Multi-month packages are available at a discount if you want to commit longer — but there’s no obligation to do so.

Ready to try a free class?

One session, no commitment. Come and experience authentic Wing Chun for yourself — Wednesday evenings in Dee Why.
